要表達 欠債 我們可用 owe [o] 這個動詞，比如說： He owes a fortune to her. = He owes her a fortune.（他欠她一筆好大的錢。）He still owes her $20 for the cab ride.（他還欠她20元的計程車車資。）表達 欠債 我們還可用 in debt [ɪn ˋdɛt] 或 in the red [ɪn ðə ˋrɛd]，俚語用法中則有 in hock [ɪn ˋhɑk]，比如： He is $ 3 million in debt/ in the red/ in hock.（他負債3百萬。）形容 債務沈重或債台高築的，則可用 heavily/deep in debt [͵hɛvɪlɪ/͵dip ɪn ˋdɛt] ；up to your neck/ears in debt [͵ʌp tə jʊɚ͵nɛk/͵ɪrz ɪn ˋdɛt] 則是 比較口語的說法。 此外，若要形容人 開始負債或陷入債務，則可用 get/run/fall slip into debt [͵gɛt/͵rʌn/͵fɔl/͵slɪp ɪntə ˋdɛt]。若要表達 銀行帳戶透支的，可用 overdrawn [͵ovɚˋdrɔn]，譬如： His account is $700 overdrawn.（他的帳戶已透支700元。）He’s overdrawn by £500.（他透支了500英鎊。）若要表達 到期的款項付不出來，導致拖延或積欠的情形，可用 behind with [bɪˋhaɪnd wɪð] 或 in arrears [ɪn əˋrɪrz] ( 正式用法 )，例如： She’s behind with her rent.（她拖欠房租。）He’s 3 months in arrears with the mortgage.（他拖欠了三個月的貸款。）
