表達 控制、掌控、操控某人 (X) 或某事物 (Y)，可透過 control [kənˋtrol] X/Y、be in control of X/Y、have control over ( 或 of ) X/Y 等，表達 某人 (X) 或某事物 (Y) 受到另一人 (Z) 的控制，可透過 X/Y is under Z’s control (= X/Y is under the control of Z )，表達 (某人) 掌控、主控，可透過 be in control、be in charge [tʃɑrdʒ]、call the tune [tun] (也可唸 [tjun]) (非正式)、call the shots (非正式)、be in the driver’s seat [sit] (美式、非正式)、be in the driving seat (英式、非正式)、be the boss 等，表達 某人 (尤指女人) 在婚姻或其他關係中扮演掌控者的角色、佔有主導地位，可透過 wear the pants (美式、非正式) 或 wear the trousers [ˋtraʊzɚz] (英式、非正式)，表達 某人 (X) 掌控一切，因此說了什麼，旁人就得照辦，可透過 what X says, goes (非正式) 或 whatever X says, goes (非正式)，表達 讓某人 (X) 知道誰掌控一切、誰說了算、誰是老大，可透過 show X who’s boss；此外，表達 控制自己的脾氣、按耐住怒火，可透過 control one’s temper [ˋtɛmpɚ] 或 keep one’s temper，表達 控制自己的情緒、情感，可透過 control oneself，當你希望對方能控制一下自己的情緒、鎮靜一點時，你可以對他說 get a grip (on yourself) 或 pull yourself together，表達 控制某人 (X) 不好的行為，使其不致影響或傷害到他人，或控制某件不好的事物 (Y)，使其不再擴散或惡化，可透過 keep ( 或 hold ) X/Y in check 或 bring X/Y under control ( 這裡的 bring 也可用 have、get、keep 等替換 )；另外，表達 暗中操控、巧妙地操控，可透過 manipulate [məˋnɪpjə͵let] 或 pull the strings [strɪŋz]，表達 某人 (X) 透過威脅、利誘的方式來操控另一人 (Z)，可透過 X has Z in X’s pocket [ˋpɑkɪt]，表達 完全控制、主宰、支配另一人 (Z)，可透過 have complete control over Z ( 或 have total control over Z )、dominate [ˋdɑmə͵net] Z、have a hold on Z ( 或 have a hold over Z )、X have Z in X’s power 等，表達 某人 (X) 因非常受到另一人 (Z) 的喜愛，因而能完全控制他、將之操控於股掌之間，可透過 X has Z eating out of X’s hand 或 X can wrap Z around X’s (little) finger (非正式) ( 這裡的 wrap 也可用 twist [twɪst] 或 wind [waɪnd] 替換，另這句話也可說成 X has Z wrapped around X’s (little) finger，同樣地，這裡的 wrapped 也可用 twisted 或 wound [waund] 替換 )；還有，表達 (一個人) 無法控制某事物 (Y) 或另一人 (Z)，可透過 lose control of Y/Z、Y/Z is beyond one’s control、lose one’s grip on Y 等，表達 (某人事物) 失去控制、失控，可透過 be out of control、get out of hand、run wild 等，表達 (某人) 情緒失控，可透過 lose control、get carried away、snap ( 指突然間情緒失控 )、lose it (非正式) 等，表達 某人 (X) 有可能受其無法控制的某事物 (Y) 或另一人 (Z) 所傷害、只能任之擺佈，可透過 X is at the mercy of Y/Z (= X is at Y’s/Z’s mercy )。
